What sound does a dog make?

A dog says “woof”. That is the spelling. This is the recording.

Why “woof” is not the whole answer

“Woof” is how English writes it down, and every language writes it differently — which tells you the spelling is about the language, not about the dog.

A small child learning the word does not need the spelling. They need the sound and the thing together, more than once, and looking slightly different each time — so that the word attaches to dogs rather than to one picture of one dog. That is why Soundly holds five photographs and five recordings behind every one of its 72 subjects.
